About us

The origins of the International Herbage Seed Group (IHSG) begin with the formation of the International Herbage Seed Production Research Group (IHSPRG), which was started in 1978 following the 28th University of Nottingham Easter School in Agricultural Science. The main objective of the IHSPRG was “to encourage cooperation and communication between workers actively engaged in herbage seed production research.” This has remained as the group’s primary mission for over 25 years. Our first IHSPRG newsletter was published in September 1979.

We have also sponsored five International Herbage Seed Conferences. The first was in 1987 in Tune, Denmark, and was followed by conferences at Corvallis, Oregon (USA) in 1991, Halle, Germany in 1995, Perugia, Italy in 1999, and Gatton, Australia in 2003. This tradition of sponsoring a conference every four years will continue with the 6th International Herbage Seed Conference in June 2007 in Sandefjord, Norway.

In addition, many members have had the opportunity to meet in conjunction with the International Grassland Congress (IGC), thus, allowing the possibility to gather approximately every two years. In July 2005, we sponsored a workshop and seed production tour near Winchester, England the week following the IGC meeting in Dublin, Ireland.

In 1999, it was decide by a ballot of the IHSPRG membership to change our name to the International Herbage Seed Group (IHSG). This shorter name coincided with the acceptance of a new logo, which has been incorporated into the IHSG web site. Newsletters are currently published twice each year, and are delivered via our web site. We invite you to Register as New Member (membership in the IHSG is free of charge) if you would like to receive e-mail notification of our next newsletter.
